Uruz: What Strength Shapes You?

Fehu asked us to reflect on what we hold. Now Uruz asks us to consider what holds us together.

The second rune in the Elder Futhark, Uruz (ᚢ), is often translated to represent “aurochs”, an ancient wild bull that once roamed Europe. This wasn’t the tame cattle of Fehu. Uruz had untamed strength that represents the the force of nature within us.

In the modern world, we don't often see this kind of power, at least, not in a healthy natural form. But Uruz reminds us: strength isn't about domination or noise. It’s about endurance, integrity, and potential.

What Uruz Meant Then

To the early Germanic peoples, the aurochs were a real creature, massive, fast, unpredictable. Hunting one wasn’t just dangerous, it was a rite of passage. Uruz represented more than just an animal. It stood for wild vitality, challenge, and the kind of strength earned through struggle.

It wasn’t only brute force. It was about the kind of strength that transforms you when you rise to meet something bigger than yourself.

What Uruz Means Now

Today, Uruz still carries that weight. But we have different trials. We don’t hunt literal aurochs anymore. We face burnout, pressure, fear, uncertainty. We wrestle with invisible forces: anxiety, self-doubt, comparison.

Uruz doesn’t make these things disappear. Instead, it asks: How do you meet them?

This rune reminds you that your body, your will, your mind, and your spirit already hold great power, but it must be shaped, and controlled.

Just as a river shapes a canyon, your strength is carved by how your power moves through you.

Uruz: Strength as a Lifestyle

The dynamic of Uruz can powerfully influence your life. Here is one example I am happy to share.

Jenna works a demanding job, cares for her aging father, and still finds time to cook meals from scratch. Not because she has endless energy, but because she’s learned something Uruz teaches well: True strength isn’t about powering through, it’s about showing up with purpose. She used to burn out trying to do it all. But since she began working with Uruz, she made small, steady shifts:

She wakes up 15 minutes earlier to stretch and breathe, not scroll.

She started lifting weights at home, not for appearance, but for resilience.

She learned to say no to one thing a week that drained her.

Now, her strength isn’t a badge of honor. It’s a lifestyle.

Uruz taught her this: Don’t just endure. Live in a way that makes you stronger.

Uruz shows us that true strength isn’t just stamina, it’s alignment. You can learn from Jenna’s example.

Here are some ways you can channel Uruz in your life:

  • Saying no to something that doesn’t build you

  • Choosing health over hustle

  • Starting again, even after a failure

  • Showing up even when it’s uncomfortable

  • Honoring your body’s needs instead of ignoring them

Uruz in Practice

Want to work with this rune this week? Try this:

1. Draw or carry the rune. Keep Uruz somewhere visible. A sticky note, a stone, a pendant.

2. Journal with it. Ask yourself:

  • Where in my life do I need to be strong, not calloused?

  • What challenge has shaped me most?

  • What kind of strength do I want to grow?

3. Move with it. Wake up early, walk, stretch, and breathe deeply. Let go of weight that doesn’t carry worth. Feel your strength, not as tension, but as who you are.

Rune Affirmation

“I am shaped by what I face, not broken. I am stronger than I was. I am becoming what I need to be.”

Let Uruz be a reminder that your strength doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s.

It just needs to be yours, honest, steady, alive.

Uruz isn’t about controlling the world. It’s about finding your own self control despite the world. It’s about not just letting moments pummel you, but meeting each moment and growing from it.

Wherever you are, tired, rebuilding, uncertain, this rune offers you a gift:

You are not weak for feeling the weight.

You are strong for carrying it.

And you’re getting stronger still.

You can do this.
