Fehu: What Do You Truly Own?


 We begin the rune journey where the Futhark itself begins with Fehu (ᚠ).


At first glance, Fehu is the “wealth rune.” It has been linked to cattle, gold, resources, and prosperity since its earliest inscriptions. But Fehu is more than a symbol of having. It’s a question: What do you really own, and what owns you?

In a culture obsessed with money, speed, vanity, and more, Fehu asks us to take a different look at value.

What Fehu Meant Then

In ancient times, Fehu literally meant cattle. Cattle were mobile wealth, you could feed people, breed more wealth, trade, or move your herd as the seasons changed. It was wealth you had to tend, protect, and walk alongside.


Fehu was not passive. It required presence.


Our ancestors understood that wealth wasn’t just what you held, it was what you carried well. What you worked for. What served the people around you, not just your ego.

What Fehu Means Now

Many of us no longer trade actual cattle, but Fehu is as relevant as ever. Today, Fehu invites us to ask: What are the resources in my life? Am I managing them, or are they managing me? Is my energy being invested where it truly matters?

Fehu is not just about income. It’s about time, health, attention, and integrity, the currencies we often spend without noticing. It reminds us that true wealth isn't measured only in dollars, but in how aligned our life is with what we value.

Fehu’s Challenge: Ownership vs. Worth

Fehu challenges modern assumptions about success. It doesn’t shame having wealth—but it asks whether your wealth serves your life, or distracts from it.


Some questions to reflect on:


  • Do I define success by numbers, or by peace?
  • Am I building a life, or maintaining a collection of status symbols?
  • What would it look like to own less but live more?


In this sense, Fehu has a shadow, too. Greed. Hoarding. The constant chase, without respite. The danger of thinking "more" means "better."

Fehu in Practice

This rune is a reminder to realign.


Here are a few ways to engage with Fehu this week:


  • Write it - Draw the rune in a journal or carve it into wood.

  • Sit with it - Ask, What am I giving the best of my energy to? Is it worth it?

  • Simplify - Identify one area where you're holding too tightly, money, time, stuff, and release control.

  • Give - Fehu is not just about what you have, but what you offer. Give something freely, your time, a meal, an act of service. You may be surprised by how grounded generosity can feel.



Let Fehu speak into the way you work, spend, save, and give. Let it remind you that you already hold more than you think. You just need to carry it wisely. Fehu is a beginning, and starts us in a meaningful direction. In a world that rewards hustle and hoarding, Fehu calls for stewardship and simplicity.


So as you step onto the rune path, ask yourself: What do I truly own? And what do I want my life to be rich in?


That’s where your real fortune lies.
